It was completely paved in 1952 and is maintained by the park service still today. It first had the name “Transmountain Highway” in the 1920s, when only a few rough wagons were able to traverse the landscape. The New Deal public work funding provided the money to reconstruct some dangerous areas, complete the road, and make it a scenic drive for the whole family to enjoy. On July 15th, 1933, the Going-To-The-Sun road was open to the public for the very first time.
